Painters
Carole Amo painting on various mediums
Born and raised on the island, started painting about 8 years ago to relax from a stressful job, retired from that job and now paint because I am relaxed. Being a self-taught painter canvass seemed to intimidating so decided to look for other mediums. Found out people throw away lots of things that can be painted on so to do our part my husband and I started to work together on items that can be "put" together and then painted and made to look good again. It was our small way of keeping things out of the landfill. Now paint on metal, paper, wood, tile and glass.

Helen Jaques oil painting
Helen is a native Victorian who feels we live in the ideal place to enjoy art and develop it. She combines her hobbies of travel, walking, photography and art. It's a great lifestyle.
Helen took art in school but did not feel successful and did not continue in this field. She trained as a teacher, then took time out to have a family. Her daughter, Sheila, showed an interest in art and took classes in oil painting with Ivah Bryant. Helen joined the classes too and enjoyed them so much that she went back to university and got a degree in art education. She worked as a Teacher-on-Call developing programs as an art specialist. She loved encouraging children to grow as artists but felt frustrated that she did not have enough time to develop her own art. Helen did manage to fit in classes in pastels and water color. She belonged to the Gilded Palette Art Club and the Victoria Society of Artists and exhibited with them. She has participated in Gorge on Art since 1998 and has had a show in the Saanich Municipal Hall in 2006-2008. In 2007 she was accepted into the Sooke Fine Arts Show. She has participated in The Glendale Gardens show since 2009. Six years ago Helen retired and scheduled art back into her life. She has focused on her first love, oils, and is excited to see a new style evolving. Her work reflects her love of the outdoors. She prefers to work on site but usually has to resort to taking pictures to refer to. She now teaches art to private students and occasionally volunteers in the schools in her grandchildren’s classes. She finds that teaching others stimulates new ideas and adds to the creativity

Keith Levang Acrylic paintings
Keith’s representational style of painting allows him to present the subject faithfully while maintaining the feel and look of a painting, rather than a photograph. His approach is to concentrate on defining the relationship between light and shadow within a strong composition. Keith has exhibited his work in many venues and has been given recognition from jurors, patrons and the public. His artwork has been acquired by private and corporate owners, throughout Canada & the US.
Keith was born and raised in Vancouver and now resides on Vancouver Island, BC where he is fully involved in the visual arts and painting full time.
After graduation, Keith entered Emily Carr College of Art, earning a 4th year Diploma. He achieved his B.Ed from UBC and embarked on a rewarding career, instructing art at the Junior and Senior High school levels.
‘I try to capture a specific moment in time, one that recalls a familiar place, memory or feeling. Having spent my life on the westcoast, the land and seascapes, shorelines, mountains and every now and then, boats and buildings, are the images which inspire me to want to preserve that familiarity on canvas.’

Linda Skalenda acrylic & oil painting landscapes & lavender fields
Born and raised in Victoria, Linda Skalenda started her art education early on with youth art lessons at The Greater Victoria Art Gallery. They proved to be a great inspiration and she has been drawing and creative in many ways since. Her interests in colour and design led her into a career of interior decorating. In that time she had a need to create in a personal way and started to explore and express her feelings and mood through painting on canvas. Linda’s painting study came mostly from her own efforts - painting continuously. She started with watercolours, then exploring and studying pastels, acrylic and oils also through work shops.
In her own words "I want to thank several esteemed Artists for sharing their knowledge through work shops, in each painting you learn something new for the next.”
Linda Skalenda worked in and ran her successful studio/ gallery for five years two in Nanaimo, BC and three in Qualicum Beach, BC.
Linda now paints in her home studio near the beach on Vancouver Island for several Galleries and Juried fine Art Shows.
BRITISH COLUMBIA MAGAZINE has just invited her to sell Art Cards and Prints though their online store. She gathers inspiration for her colourful canvases by sketching or taking photographs while hiking, kayaking and travelling with her husband. Whether it’s her whimsical animals or her sensitive land or seascapes, the passion and use of exciting, vibrant colours that she puts onto her canvases make you stop in your tracks to take a second look. Linda has garnered "Awards of Excellence”, "Honorable Mentions” and the all important "People’s Choice” awards in many Federation of Canadian Artists and selected juried fine art shows. Her works are now in collections across Canada, the United States, Ireland and the UK.

Terri Reid Painter/custom jewelery designer/goldsmith
I am a full-time artist, teaching, painting and selling in Victoria, BC.
I was a successful custom jewelery designer and goldsmith in Vancouver for 7 years before deciding to move out of the city and change my lifestyle. In 1986 I bought 2 acres on Salt Spring Island, lived in a tent and built my own cabin, which I lived in for 11 years. I am a self taught artist and began my exploration of various painting styles, materials and techniques during this time.
My work includes close up views of nature, semi-abstract figures, realistic portraits, large, bright still lifes, subtle watercolours, plein aire sketches and sculptures. My pieces can be heavily textured or smooth with many glazes. They range in size from 8 x 10" to 4 x 5 feet.
I am inspired by the bright colours of Mexico, where I lived and & painted for many months, but also by the West Coast's beauty. I try to incorporate emotion in each piece, whether it is peace and thoughtfulness through a quiet contemplation of natural patterns, or stimulating through colour and energetic movement
I also teach Oil Painting Classes for absolute beginners, in Victoria, BC. These painting classes teach various oil painting techniques, colour theory, mixing colour, paint application, depth, shading, composition and more.
Please feel free to call me with any questions or for prices.

Edmir Fernandes oil on canvas
Edmir has been living in Victoria, BC Canada since March 2001. He is originally from Curitiba City, southeast Brazil. Edmir graduated in Biomedicine which is the equivalent to Biological Sciences in Medical Immunology in Canada. Edmir immigrated to Canada as a skilled worker; however he became enthusiastic with visual arts and decided to explore and develop his creative side through painting. Needless to say, his passion for the arts became stronger every day and now he has a great desire to continue in the field. He has learned how to work judiciously as taught by his visual arts private instructors. To date (within the last 10 years) Edmir has completed nearly 100 oils on canvases on different subjects, hoping 2010 is the year for the momentum to take place and start making his artworks seen by the public. In 2003 Edmir painted an Acrylic on Paper Board 30" x 40" piece entitled "After the Rainbow". This painting came out of a devastating series of forest fires across British Columbia. This particular art piece reflected the emotions and frustrations of the wildfire victims.
Edmir is constantly challenged by his desire for simplicity in his work. Edmir does not start a painting with a preconceived idea; however, he lets himself be led by his inspirations and lets the work take its own progress. Paint is just paint. Error does not exist.
Painting connects Edmir to the world of colours allowing him to express his loose painting style freely. He works primarily on oils, both canvases and wood panels. The work is rich in colours, textures, with hues emanating from multiple layers of paint. He concentrates on getting into a state of "rediness", creating and conceptualizing the colours and brushstrokes needed to execute his work by setting up the desired variety of materials, which occurs within a state of mind, during which time the artist is oblivious of what is being created. Edmir’s passion is to create paintings for the enjoyment of others and himself.
Edmir has a home-based studio under the name EFERNANDES, which is also the signature of his paintings. His paintings are in many private and public collections, to mention Singapore, Canada, US and Brazil.

Kristi Bridgeman art, illustrations, calligraphy
I was born into a family of artists and gardeners on the Pacific Coast, and
now live in Saanich on Vancouver Island, B.C. with my husband and two
children. My amber and sepia pallet evolved after searching for earth
friendly mediums. The brown bottled ink and quill pens, and water based
paints with a sepia glaze - give the works an antique and west coast
feeling. I enjoy a variety of subjects- from landscapes to mandalas and
children's illustration themes.
Some of my more recent shows include the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's, "Full Circle Contemporary Mandala Exhibit", several Sooke Harbour House Gallery Feature Exhibits, Sooke and Sidney Fine Arts, the Moss Street Paint-In/Small Paintings/Art in Bloom, Butchart Gardens, and various Island Illustrators shows ("Garry Oak Habit", "In our Lifetime", "Wood and Water" "A Climate of Change", "Artists of Conscience", "Slow Food-Slow Art"), and Federation of Canadian Artists Victoria Chapter Spring and Autumn Exhibitions.
I have dozens of published works but the three most recent are childrens books with the Poet P.K. Page. I have illustrated and won awards for international children's books works, and worked with the University of Victoria, University of British Columbia and Oxford University Press. I've had images featured on Rogers Chocolates Feature Tins and recently created a "Dream Fish Mandala" for the Stream of Dreams Society www.streamofdreams.org

Jim and Barb Cowling life-like animal painted rocks / prints
Let me introduce myself, my name is Barbara J. Cowling…I am a self-taught Artist and I live and work in Victoria, B.C. During the 1980s, I lived in the Cowichan Valley, and it is there that the Artist in me was born. In the abundant beauty of forested areas, watching the wild life, a desire grew to express myself in a host of unique art forms; from Masks of paper mache and lichen, to Lichen Jewellery. Now, for the last 14 years, I have been creating Animal Rock Art. While mastering this Art form, I have challenged myself to create life-like renderings, using the medium of acrylic paint on stone.
My intention, when I began painting Animal Rock Art, was to bring this Art form from its image of “just handicraft” to a “fine art” level. In August of 2006, I had my first Art Show at the Community Arts Council Gallery. The morning of the show opening, I was amazed when the Times Colonist, under the Arts section, printed a full page featuring my work. They also took a close up photo of the eyes of one of my owls, and printed it on the front page. The gallery started receiving calls to purchase pieces sight unseen, something I was told never happens. I was floored…. a sold out Art show, a dream come true, yes, the power of intention.
Since that time, I’ve had my work shown at the Look Shows in the Bay Center, and sold pieces, including matted prints of specific items, at various venues around Victoria, including the Night Market in the Inner arbor, and at Gorge On Art.

![]() | In this body of work I am exploring our connection to the natural cycles. I find myself fascinated by the moraless honesty and beauty of the natural world, and intrigued by our separate distinction as humans. Using the earthy material of clay, I have encased human faces in plant forms to place the human experience within the natural growth cycle of plants. The seed pods suggest a dormant potential while the blooms suggest both a realization and a climax, inevitably followed by decay and renewal. Through these works I explore our identity as humans in relationship with an organic earth- searching for unification or a sense of belonging. | ![]() |

Suzanne DeStaffany digital illustration - fine art prints & cards
Suzanne is originally from northwest Washington State and has made Victoria, British Columbia her adopted home since 1997. As a newly-emerging professional illustrator with a smidgen of formal arts training, she creates a surprisingly wide scope of subjects within the medium of digital illustration.
Whether it's a meditative fractal creation or a sunny afternoon scene, Suzanne's images are effective in traditional print media such as book and album covers, fine art prints, and art cards. Experience gained in the sign industry compelled her to occasionally delve into larger scale pieces by utilizing the most modern printing technology and materials available today. This versatility produces an inventive amalgamation of visual art and communication.
Her premiere exhibition, Digital Dreams and Fractal Fantasies, included twenty-six framed giclée prints that were featured at The Gallery At The Mac in Victoria in May and June of 2010, with more exhibitions and events planned throughout the summer and fall. Additional information and an online gallery can be found on her website at www.destaffanydesign.com. Andrew Niemann Photo enhancement
After growing up in Germany, Edmonton and finally Victoria, Andrew Niemann attended art school at Uvic for a BFA. He then completed a photo technical diploma at Langara College and spent some time freelancing, shooting horse shows and doing commercial work before landing at the BC Provincial Museum, as it was then called, to do photography for the Ethnology department.
By 1980 Andrew had developed an interest in composing electronic music which brought him to computers and programming and these in turn led to the building of computer animations and interactives for museum exhibits and video productions. This work involved the use of Photoshop, and Photoshop slowly drew Andrew back to his love of painting from his art school days - albeit now on the computer and using photos instead of an empty canvas.

Photography
Alison Duerden painting
In this current body of work, I aspire to portray underlying themes of fragility, imperfection, and vulnerability, by exploring the concealed patterns in the natural world. By studying this natural world, I take from my observations the idea of the interwoven intricacies between each delicate petal or leaf, and the clustering layers of light and shadows.
The evocative beauty of the flowers and the emotions that they awaken in the observer has always been a subject of fascination for me.
I was born and raised in Toronto, but have always been drawn to the west coast. In 2004, I received my BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design. In 2006, I moved to Victoria, BC, which I call home.
Alison is presenting her work thanks to Prestige Picture Framing, 2002 Oak Bay Ave.

One string trio “Conversations With the Moon” was performed last spring by the Acadia University String Ensemble. He is working on several pieces, one of which “Dancing Between the Drops” is envisioned as a ballet.
Artist's Statement
Nature is the only original art, and all humankind can do is copy this master art to form his or her own creations. Whether it be architecture, science, art or any other discipline, it all stems from nature. My aim is to "capture" nature's designs, colours and moods in my photography, my music, or my painting, quite often producing the most abstract or the most symmetrical of designs. It's quite simply a matter of "vision."

Coincidentally, while working on the conservation of a collection of old family photos, he discovered the possibilities of Photoshop. Totally self taught, he now produces multi layered work of vibrant colour and magical depth.

James Austin photographs/oil & acrylic painting
My love of photography started early in life. At age 19, I was leaving home for a year to travel and do volunteer work with the "Katimavik" program. My mother bought me a camera to photograph some of the beautiful places that I was to visit. I immediately knew that these images, with the emotions and places that they represented, were special to me. Since that time, photography has been a constant form of expression for me.Painting came later. I had always thought about trying to paint. One day while camping up island, I went into the market at Coombs and purchased a couple of frames, a pack of brushes and some oil paints. My very first painting emerged, and I knew that I was hooked on this form of art. I am definitely influenced by a few particular artists, can you tell which ones? Please stop by my display this weekend and let me know what you think of my artworks.

Jack Cooper Concrete garden sculpture
Original and Classical Designs sculpted by Vancouver Island Artist, Jack Cooper. His creations include Architectural Keystones, Gargoyles, Greenmen, Faeries, Gnomes, garden sprites and other naturally inspired garden themes. Jack creates his original art work in clay, casts them in concrete and hand finishes each piece in natural earth tones to enhance any garden setting. His whimsical and architectural pieces bring life and mystery to any home or garden space and are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Jack's work has been presented at Art Events on Vancouver Island including many successful Moss St. Paint In events including the Art in Bloom Festival. Jack has been invited to exhibit his work at local art galleries and as a sculptor he has participated in the Land Conservancy Abkhazi Garden events, Hatley Park Paint In and the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific Paint In. He has also been a guest artist at the Westshore Festival and the Commonwealth Games Art Venue. For many years, Jack's garden sculptures have been sold at exclusive garden shops on Vancouver Island and his garden sculpture and paintings are enjoyed by an international clientèle. Jack has been contracted by the Land Conservancy to reproduce replicas of historic garden tiles, for the restoration of the Ross Bay Villa garden project.
As well as being a sculptor, Jack has shown his talents working in acrylics; his paintings and Giclee art cards depict happy scenes from the whimsical world that lives in his limitless imagination. His paintings and sculptures show a particular talent for anatomy and facial expressions. Jack's sculptures are often inspired by his own illustrations and drawings, which is evident in his depiction of the whimsical images of mystical and imagined pieces that he has created for home and garden spaces.
Metalwork
Dallas Duobaitis string installation
I am a Victoria BC based trans-disciplinary artist. Primarily as a painter I was influenced by local Victoria First Nations artists, as well as by large scale abstractions, surrealism, and sequential artworks. My current work is a combination and mixture of these elements; it is directed by the empirical concept that our past experiences are the basis for the later interpretations of future and current experiences.I focus on the situations that generate from biases and expectations resulting from acquired experiences. My aim is to confront the viewer through my work with their own individual biases and expectancies, and in interpreting the work, encourage them to produce alternates.
My goal is for the work not to present any specific meaning, but to present the viewer with their own experience of generating or finding meaning.

Karen Lancey garden art & home décor
Karen Lancey has been designing and selling her successful metal creations in Victoria now for more than 8 years as a full time career, painting, jewelery, beaches and garden design also fill her spare time. Born in England and raised in Alberta, her many winter travels and sights have been a tremendous source of inspiration. Completing 4 years at the Alberta College of art and design majoring in graphic design features strongly in her work, with everything having a very solid sense of design and appeal at a core level. A combination of all these things and a love of nature comes across strong in the pieces, add to that a very high attention to detail and a side of whimsy, and you have some extremely stunning one of a kind pieces of art. The pieces and their inspiration are always changing and adapting, the challenge of creating something from found objects has been a natural progression to some very creative work in the last 6 years. Combining that with Karen's strong design background and proven 2D work has led to a line of very successful and award winning work shown and sold in high end stores and galleries on Vancouver Island. | Website: | www.metalmermaid.com |

Weaving & Textiles
Dorrie Collins stitchery art
I was born in the UK and have made Victoria my home for the last 30 years.
Arts, crafts, drawing and water-colour painting have always been a significant part of my life. I have been fascinated by sewing and embroidery since childhood.
Between l994 and l998, I attended the City and Guilds Embroidery and Design course with Gail Harker at Coupeville Arts Centre on Whidbey Island. This has been the foundation for my latest creative explorations with stitchery and textiles.
I am particularly inspired by the natural world and by beautiful textiles. I love colour and texture and experimenting with layering of fabrics. Lately I have been moving away from traditional stitchery methods to a looser approach in which I alternate painting and stitching to create more three-dimensional effects.
I have been creating my work on a commercial basis since 2004. In 2004 and 2005, I exhibited and sold my work at Art in the Garden in Vancouver. In November 2005 I participated in Out of Hand, Victoria and in August 2006, I participated in the Filberg Festival (Comox). In 2007, I participated in the Sidney Artisan Show and exhibited and sold my work at the Sooke Fine Arts Show and at the Glendale Gardens Art Show; In 2009 I exhibited at the Sidney Fine Art Show. I also sell privately and take commissions.

Susan Teece textile artist
I have been obsessed with cutting up fabric and stitching it back together since I was a child. I remember exploring Grandma’s closet of sewing trinkets and I figured out how to sew. At university I focused on Home Economics, Art and Anthropology, graduating with a degree in Textile Science. I have traveled to Europe, Britain, New Zealand, USA, and Japan. Careers have given me the opportunity to experience the fashion industry in Toronto, design costumes, help open Miniature World in Victoria, do display and advertising at Woodwards, and teach Home Economics. Classes on contemporary quilt making and fibre art techniques have guided my ideas. My family is supportive and I love hearing their opinions. The teacher in me is always exploring better ways to interpret and construct a project.
Fabrics are intoxicating - the soft textures, the glorious patterns and the lively colours inspire me. I challenge myself to create a landscape, to capture a moment, a mood, and a sense of our vast and unique country using fabric, paint and stitching as my medium. My art is inspired by Canadian topics such as lighthouses, old buildings, gardens, and big trees.
My work has been accepted into several juried shows. Most recently, the Sooke Fine Arts Show, the Quilt National Show in Calgary, and the APWQ show in Seattle. As well, my work has been displayed at guild shows, local shops, community galleries, and the Glendale Gardens Art and Music event. The Vancouver Island wall hanging won first place. My patterns are carried by shops across Western Canada and in the USA.

Jewellery-Beads
Stuart Duncan engraved silver jewelry
As a child, Stuart was always drawing, deriving inspiration from the
natural world around him. His ability to depict the world through the
use of realistic lines led him to a career as an illustrator. Later, it
inspired him to produce a line of jewellery that marries realism to
silver.
He lives on 12 acres of forest in Victoria, B.C. He only has to look out the window to see deer, ravens, shooting stars, or slugs. He believes that when we look at the colours of a bird, the beautiful shape of a fern or the movement of a heron, we recognize the beauty & strength of the natural world. He believes it is important to celebrate the natural world because, so often , we forget that we are also a part of it.

Mosaics
Anne Swannell mosaicist
My mosaic panels incorporate broken china and pottery, ordinary (and not-so-ordinary) ceramic tile, Venetian glass, and sometimes beads or buttons. I made the mosaic mandala above the hot pool in the Sooke Leisure Centre, and my mosaic orca is in the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. The mosaic wall panel in the entry way of Monterey Middle School is one I did with the help of a grade 6 class. In recent years, I have been trying to take my flower mosaics to a new dimension, by making them “3-D”. So sometimes pieces with finished edges are lifted above the surface of the mosaic, and sometimes the vase and the flowers “bulge” out from the background. | Website: | www.anneswannellart.ca |

Eva Trinczek painted banners, mailboxes, art cards, prints
Eva Trinczek immigrated to Canada more than 20 years ago. She spent the first six years in Oakville, Ontario, where she met her husband. They moved to Vancouver Island in 1990 with their three children and have been living in the Cowichan Valley ever since. Eva, mostly self-taught, has always had a natural love for art.
Much of her creativity was inspired growing up in a home where many things were handcrafted. In 2003, after raising and home schooling her three children, Eva decided to actively produce and market her art. In 2004 Eva welcomed the opportunity and joined Imagine That! Artisans' Designs as a member. To show her artwork in Downtown Duncan has been a rewarding and positive experience.
For Eva inspiration is everywhere, most of all in nature. Eva's paintings, done in acrylics, pastels and oils are colourful and vibrant. Many are of animals (a favourite is birds). Other subjects include flowers, still life and people of different ethnic backgrounds.
"My ideas for subject matter are endless" Eva laughs" I would like to paint 'one of everything', which means I have to continue painting for a very long time". Besides painting, Eva enjoys photography and jewellery making. Eva welcomes customers to her studio where more of her paintings, banners, art cards, photography, jewellery and much more can be found. Watch for the "Studio Open" sign, or call to make an appointment.
