Our Board, Mission and Vision

Simon WadeSimon Wade President Born in Victoria, Simon Wade holds degrees from Victoria College of the University of British Columbia and from the University of Washington. He joined the Department of External Affairs in 1967 and served on Canadian diplomatic missions in Dublin, Rome, Budapest, Warsaw and Bridgetown. From 1993 to 1996, he served as High Commissioner to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. From 2001 to 2005, he was the High Commissioner to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. After retiring in 2006, he returned to Victoria. He recently returned to Trinidad and Tobago as acting High Commissioner for six months. In Ottawa, he has been, inter alia, Director of the Cabinet Liason Division and Director of the Corporate Communications Division of Foreign Affairs. Simon is married and has two children.	President
Ron CoxRon Cox Vice-President Ron Cox, a resident of Victoria since 1981, is a management consultant and passionate gardener. Professionally he advises organizations on strategy and information technology investments. His work has given him the opportunity to travel across Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia. While working in England for 6 years, Ron and his wife Beverly developed their passion for gardening which they continue to fulfill in their Fairfield garden. Ron was a Board member of the Victoria YM-YWCA for 7 years where he led strategy planning workshops and changes to Board governance. He was also actively involved in fund raising, including annual campaigns, capital campaigns and the Y endowment program. In 2006 he was involved in a community visioning exercise with the Fairfield Community Association. Ron served on the H.C.P. Board in 2007 and was Chair of the Development Committee	Vice-President
Laurie Hardy Laurie Hardy Secretary Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Laurie spent time in Tasmania as a Catering Manager for the Hobart Hospital before immigrating to Canada. She attended UVic and earned a degree in Human and Social Development. After about twelve years raising two children, Laurie joined Camosun College. For the last ten years there she assisted and taught in the Gardening and Customer Service Program. During that time she also got a Master Gardener certificate, a certificate in Organic Urban Landcare from Gaia College and a certificate in Basic Landscape Design. She served as H.C. P. Board Secretary in 2007.	Secretary

Stephanie CairnsStephanie Cairns Director Stephanie has a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Political Science from the University of Toronto and a M.Sc. from the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University in Sweden. She has twenty-five years of strategic advice, policy analysis, and organizational leadership with senior politicians, major think-tanks and non-government organizations in the fields of sustainable development, climate change, pricing of ecological services, and protected areas management. Mel Couvelier Mel Couvelier Director As Mayor of Saanich, Mel was instrumental in the establishment of the HCP in 1979 and has been a dedicated supporter ever since. He is the current Chair of our Honorary Board of Directors and was awarded a life HCP membership at the AGM in 2006. Mel has served as B.C. Minister of Finance. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Victoria Airport Authority and is Vice Chair of Memorial Park Society.	Director
Gail GabelGail Gabel Director Gail was born in Australia and educated at the University of Sydney in Education and Law. She has also studied Business and Commerce. She immigrated to Canada in 1973. After more than thirty years in the corporate world, Gail stepped down as President and CEO of ESI Environmental Sensors Inc in 2006, a company that developed commercial technologies related to fresh water management and was her own privately owned company before becoming publicly traded in 1997. Currently Gail is a Member of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Canada's primary funding mechanism for universities and research organizations. She has a Board level appointment on the UVic Innovation and Development Corporation. She has been Chair of the Premier's Advisory Council for Science and Technology, Vice-Chair of the Science Council of BC, was an advisor to Royal Roads University Environmental Studies Degree Program, and has served on a number of national boards. She has been Chair of the Board of Governors of Glenlyon Norfolk School and recently became a board member of the Garth Homer Society.	Director
Robert J. (Bob) HunterRobert J. (Bob) Hunter Director Bob has an engineering and IT background plus expertise in marketing, business, and management. He is a specialist in strategic consulting. Bob's experience ranges from executive and senior level management in the high technology and consulting industries to marketing, consulting, systems engineering and systems development. Originally from Alberta, he is also a gardener and took the Master Gardener Course in 2004.	Director
Larry MacintoshLarry Macintosh Director Larry attended UBC and is a chartered accountant. He is now an independent management/business consultant but has worked for many years as Controller or CFO in numerous companies. Larry has worked in a variety of industries, in Hi-Tech and HR recruiting. He has been a board member of a number of service organizations. Larry is well versed in systems, finance, accounting and strategy and has experience in both private companies and not-for-profit. Having excellent executive level communication skills Larry will be a valuable contributor to the Board.	Director
Peter MeekisonPeter Meekison Director Peter Meekison is University Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Alberta. As Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Alberta from July 1984 to August 1991 he was involved in all facets of university administration, governance and policy making. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria and sits on the Board of the Canada West Foundation. He has recently been named Chair of the Board of Governors of Royal Roads University. In June 1986 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Peter received a B.A.Sc (Mechanical Engineering) and B.A. (Political Science and Economics) from the University of British Columbia, an M.A. (Political Science) from the University of Western Ontario and a Ph.D. (Political Science) from Duke University. Since retiring he has been involved in a number of international activities, particularly with the Ottawa-based Forum of Federations. In 2004 Peter took the Master Gardener program at the HCP. He is a keen gardener and supporter of the HCP and is a past member of the Education Committee.	Director
Darren ReedDarren Reed Director Born in North Vancouver, moved to the Saanich Peninsula at the age of two. Married with one pre-school aged child. Recent graduate of the Pacific Horticulture College, Class of 2008, and also holds a CHT designation with the B.C.L.N.A.. Worked for the last 18 years with the Victoria School District in both the Operations and Maintenance. Has until recently been involved with the local union executive and grievance committee in various capacities, served on several school district joint committees. Co-ordinated a 256 participant ball hockey tournament with all the proceeds going to the Help Fill a Dream Foundation. Currently helping with a small, not for profit daycare society in the capacity of a director and as the chair of the staff relations committee, and a board member for the Victoria Ball Hockey Association. David RutherfordDavid Rutherford Director Born and raised in Victoria, Dave attended the University of Victoria studying history, geography, education, and public administration. During this time he spent summers working as a gardener at Royal Roads Military College, Hatley Park. In the 1980's he became the Head Gardener and spent a few years on the HCP garden committee. From 1995 the new Royal Roads University kept life interesting with gardening and election to the Board of Governors at RRU for seven years. Dave joined the HCP Board of Directors in 2005. He is Manager of Grounds and Gardens at Royal Roads and for the Royal Roads University Foundation land-based projects.	Director

Mission Statement

We enrich our community by sharing the beauty and joy of gardening, and by demonstrating the importance of plant diversity to life in our world.

We accomplish this by:

• Developing and maintaining diverse north Pacific demonstration gardens, designed to educate visitors on good horticultural practices, and to provide public enjoyment
• Demonstrating responsible stewardship of our forest and wetlands through sound habitat restoration, conservation and agro forestry practices
• Providing horticultural education, including an accredited horticultural certificate program, for garden enthusiasts regardless of age, in an exciting learning environment
• Providing a comprehensive resource centre and meeting place, which facilitates the sharing of knowledge within the horticultural community
• Developing and fostering community partnerships and providing rewarding opportunities for our staff and volunteers.
