We wish to invite you to explore the wonder of plants with us at Glendale Gardens! We have a variety of interactive workshops available that are designed to specifically appeal to students.
Glendale Gardens and Woodlands in Saanich is part of a 103 acre property which includes a Conservation Park. The Park provides a feeding area for over 35 varieties of birds and contains pockets of Garry Oak and sensitive native plant material.
The 6 acres of landscaped gardens at Glendale feature many demonstration areas that will interest children:
The Children’s Garden features a “Jack in the Beanstalk” bean pole, a whimsical playhouse, a “Fountain of Youth”, and lots of room for imaginative play. Adult admission is by invitation only!
The Herb Garden, keeps the bees busy and the butterflies happy. It provides a kaleidoscope of sensory pleasures for the children.
The Native Garden is an earth-friendly habitat for birds and insects.
And if you time your visit correctly, the berry patch, vegetable garden, and fruit orchard will be bursting with flavour and color.
There is much more to explore – so come and see it for yourself!
• COMPOST AND MAGICIANS OF THE UNDERGROUND – K/Grade 1 & up
It is fascinating that food scraps can be transformed into nutrients to feed our plants! The students will see the decomposition process at the compost station. There will be open discussion on the importance of compost and its role in keeping our earth healthy. A visit to the worm bench will have students interacting with red wigglers – the magicians – while learning about the role they play in nature. These little wonders convert food scraps and paper into nutrient rich fertilizer. Instructions on how to build a worm bin for school or home will be provided.
• WHAT’S FOR DINNER? – K/Grade 1 & up
A visit to the vegetable garden will lead into an activity showing the connection between what is growing in the garden and the food on the dinner plate. A scavenger hunt will send students exploring the leafy rows where taste testing is a must! A venture into the herb garden will expand the taste and aroma experience.
• SOIL – THE BUILDING BLOCK OF LIFE – Grade 2/3 and up
Students will get their hands dirty while learning about different soil textures and types. This workshop will demonstrate the importance of providing plants with the right planting medium.
• POLLINATING SUPERHEROES – Grade 4 and up
The friendly Mason Bee is the perfect garden pet for it does not sting and it can pollinate 1600+ flowers in one day! The class will visit our Mason Bee Hotel and learn about the life cycle of these beneficial beauties. Instructions on how to build a M.B. Hotel for school or home will be provided.
• SEED COLLECTING – Grade 4/5 - Available in the fall
We will explore the garden while looking for seeds to collect for future planting. Seed dispersion and the importance of saving seeds will be discussed.
• POLLUTING OUR PLANET – HOW NOT TO! Grade 5/6
Students will create four models of Earth showing the various effects of pollution. Oil spills, acid rain and the incorrect/overuse of fertilizers will be explored. We will show how pollution is spread through the food chain. Participants will observe and record results. Post activities will be provided for when students return to their classrooms.
• YOGA IN THE GARDEN – All grades and teachers too!
Bring your class to Glendale for a garden tour followed by a fun-filled yoga class. It will help students develop body awareness, expanded imagination and peacefulness while taking in the smells and sounds of nature. All will leave feeling refreshed and renewed!
Workshops are available Wed afternoons and Thursdays and Fridays all day. They are approximately 1.5 hours long. Each garden visit includes a guided tour with the workshop. The fee is $50.00 per class and includes 2 accompanying teachers. Each additional adult will be $5.00. Classes are also welcome to stay for lunch. Workshops may vary depending on the season.
